Throwback Thursday: ‘Next Lifetime’

Throwback Thursday: ‘Next Lifetime’

I can remember lying on my sister’s bed, listening to Erykah Badu’s Baduizm album on repeat and thinking about how much I wanted to be a teenager in the 90’s. Fifteen years later, Erykah Badu is still one of my favorite artists especially since I am now old enough to fully comprehend her lyrics.

“Next Lifetime” tells a classic tale of a woman being torn between the man she is with and the man she truly loves. Badu uses her smooth neo-soul rhythms to assist in taking you on a journey through her mind as she imagines her and her lover as butterflies, loving each other without restrictions.

“Next Lifetime” reached number one on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hip Chart and Baduizm helped neo-soul as a genre of music climb to popularity and placed Erykah Badu as one of neo-soul’s leading artist.

We gave you all the opportunity to choose this week’s Throwback Thursday 90’s R&B favorite and the results are in! This hit was one of the longest running  number-one R&B singles in 1993. The remix takes the original song, ‘Right Here’ and combines samples from Michael Jackson’s ‘Human Nature.’ We all know that this is one of those songs you can’t help but to sing along to while riding in your car down the interstate with the windows down.  SWV gave us a song that will be remembered for generations!

My friends can vouch for me when I say that this is my all time favorite Biggie song. It not only has an awesome melody behind the lyrics, that originally  derived from Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit” (another classic), but also sends a message of inspiration. When you listen to this song, it not only makes you want to dance your life away and sing along, but also encourages you to use your past to help motivate and  elevate you to your future.
